Liquid fuel stoves remain the most popular choice for many people despite the popularity of canister fuel stoves. This is due to the fact that they are the best in cold weather, have a low price, a (arguably) less harmful environmental impact and are available worldwide. Liquid fuel stoves make excellent emergency kits due to their exceptional field maintenance, legendary durability, and multi-fuel compatibility in some cases.

Dual Fuel – What does it mean?

Dual fuel means that the product is able to be powered either by unleaded petrol purchased at the service station, or shellite. Shellite is a cleaner-burning fuel that extends the life span of the generator. Colemans’ own shellite fuel also contains a rust inhibitor and has a long shelf life.

Are they safe to use?

Absolutely. Coleman Dual Fuel is safe to use, just like any other product that uses flammable liquids.

Does it smell?

No. You will only notice a smell when you fill up the fuel tank. The Coleman Dual Fuel products emit no smelly fumes when in use.

How much do they cost to run?

No. The Powerhouse stove can burn up to 2 hours with a 1700ml fuel tank. While the Northstar Lantern will last up to 14hrs on a tank of 950ml. If you assume petrol costs $1.30 per 1 litre, then the cost of running the stove is about $1.10 an hour and the cost for the Northstar lantern is less than 10 cents.

How bright are lanterns?

Both the Northstar and Coleman Powerhouse lanterns emit a warm, adjustable light with 861 or 1138 lumens. These lanterns are versatile and provide a natural feel for your camping.

How hot are these stoves? The Coleman Powerhouse has two burners that can be adjusted to a heat output of 17000 BTU, which is plenty of heat. Meanwhile, the Sportster stove only has one burner with an output of 10,500 BTU.

What could go wrong?

Using clean fuel will usually solve the problem. Impurities can build up in fuel after prolonged use. You will need spare mantles for all dual fuel stoves and lanterns. Which Liquid Fuel Should You Choose?

PROS & CONS OF THE COMMON LIQUID FUELS

White Gas (NAPHTHA).

White Gas is the fuel of choice for many North Americans, whether they are heading out on a weekend trip in the summer or a month long winter expedition to the Alaska Range. White gas will work with almost any liquid fuel pressurized stove. This fuel is cleaner burning than other liquid fuels and vaporizes at lower temperatures, making it easier to start your stove. If you spill it, the residue and odor will be less offensive.

White gas is sometimes referred to as “Coleman Fuel”. Coleman fuel is not the same across all brands, but it should work with any stove that uses white gas. MSR has a special blend of white fuel called SuperFuel. It burns cleaner and is more refined than any other white gasoline on the market. It contains no additives, which reduces the need for stove maintenance and fuel line clogs.

It is better to purchase white gas in smaller bottles, such as SuperFuel, unless you are going through gallons. The fuel will begin to degrade once you have opened the container. A gallon of Coleman fuel can degrade if you do not use it often. It may also build up shellac, which will clog the stove or pump filters.

White gas and automotive gasoline are different fuels that are not interchangeable.

Kerosene

Kerosene is the choice of world travelers. You can find it in the remotest corners of the planet. The fuel is cheap and readily available but also smelly, dirty and difficult to ignite. The quality of fuel can vary widely. For example, something labeled as “kerosene”, in Canada, may be very different from the same product in Bangladesh. Some fuels are less refined and dirtier in certain parts of the globe. Use the “k jet” that comes with your stove. It may be marked K, GK or DK according to the stove. Check the manual. It is important to know the maintenance procedure for your stove. The fuel that you purchased from the local merchant at the side of the highway in an old oil barrel may burn cleaner than you expect and clog up your stove more quickly than you would like.

Diesel

Most people hate diesel, but some love it. Diesel is dirty, smells bad, is hard to light and more likely to ignite your stove. It is cheap and uses less energy in the refinement process, making it a good choice for the environment. Some multi-fuel stoves will only run white gas or kerosene, but not diesel. Check the fuel type approvals before you end up 20 miles away from the nearest road and with fuel you cannot use.

Petrol Automotive Gasoline

This fuel should only be used as a last resort. You’ll need to be careful with gasoline. As mentioned above, many stoves that can burn white gas also have the ability to burn gasoline. The additives used in gasoline are designed to improve the performance of car engines. However, these additives will also damage seals on your stove’s fuel pump and line. This can make them more susceptible to leaks. White gas produces less smoke, but gasoline will produce more. What you purchase at the gas station may contain up to 25% ethanol. In low-percentage mixes, ethanol is an alcohol. It may not have a significant impact on the way your stove burns but can cause corrosion pitting in aluminum fuel containers. You should not store gasoline with ethanol in the fuel bottle.

Contrary to popular opinion, the best auto gas to purchase is the lowest quality. Low grades contain fewer additives, and behave better when used in backpacking stoves. The superheating can cause additives and other impurities in the fuel to clog up the fuel line or jet. Auto gas also varies because the additives, as well as the mixture, change regionally and seasonally. The gas you purchase in Colorado during the winter will be different from the gas that you find in the summer, and then again it may differ from the gasoline you can get in Arizona or California.

Alcohol Denatured

You’ll hear about denatured ethanol as a cooking fuel on most backpacking blogs. Some ultralight backpacking enthusiasts have built their own alcohol stoves, and they use them with success. Most liquid-fuel backpacking stoves that use a pressurized system will not work safely with alcohol. Please read the manuals again.

Alternative Liquid Fuels

Other fuels are available, some will work in an emergency and others won’t. Certain fuels, such as aviation gasoline (“avgas”) or jet fuel (often containing lead additives), are similar to other fuels. They may work in your stove. Some fuels like biodiesel and pure plant oils are not as good. The majority of manufacturers don’t recommend using alternative fuels. However, you can find out what other people have experienced by doing a quick search online.
